Is it safe to keep a screenshot of your seed phrase on your phone?

Short answer. No. A screenshot or photo of your seed phrase (also called a recovery phrase) is not safe on any phone, in any app, whoever made your wallet. If you already have one, the steps are below. If you still want the phrase on your phone, there is a way that has no picture in it.

Is a screenshot of a seed phrase safe?

A seed phrase is the 12 or 24 words that open your crypto wallet. Some wallets call it a recovery phrase or a secret recovery phrase. Whoever sees the words can take the money in that wallet, and a stolen transfer cannot be undone.

A picture of those words travels easily:

How to store a seed phrase safely

Write it by hand on paper, or on a metal plate, in order. Keep it offline in a place only you can reach. Make a second copy and keep it somewhere else. Do not put it in notes, email, messengers or a cloud drive: that is the same problem as a screenshot. Your wallet maker's own instructions come first.

Took a screenshot already? Do this, in this order

  1. Stay calm and do not send money anywhere in a hurry.
  2. Check your phone for anything suspicious, such as apps you did not install. If you find something, create the new wallet on a different, clean device.
  3. Create a new wallet. It gets a new phrase: write it on paper.
  4. Move your money to the new wallet, following your wallet maker's steps.
  5. Now delete the old picture everywhere: the gallery, the trash, cloud backups, other devices, messengers.

Do not delete the old phrase until all your money has moved, on every network you use.

Want your seed phrase on your Android phone? Keep it as words, not a picture

ZeroBox has a section called Keys. It does not keep a photo. It keeps the words themselves, encrypted with AES-256 inside the vault. The app has no internet permission, so it cannot send anything out. You can check that yourself.

You type the words with suggestions, and the app catches most typos right away. Or you point the camera at a printed phrase and the phone reads it.

Then you choose how to guard it.

Keep it simple. The phrase sits in your phone, encrypted. To look at it you enter your PIN every time, even when the vault is already open. There is no copy button, so the words never reach the clipboard.

Fortress. ZeroBox splits the phrase into three parts. Any two parts bring the phrase back. One part alone shows nothing. One part stays in the phone and you write the other two on paper. After that the whole phrase is not on the phone at all, so even a thief holding your unlocked phone finds nothing usable.

Screenshots are blocked inside ZeroBox, so you cannot capture the phrase by accident while it is on the screen.

For large sums, pick Fortress. For a small wallet, simple is enough. You can switch from simple to Fortress later.

ZeroBox also hides your photos and videos behind a PIN. See how to hide photos and videos on Android.
